Christmas natle

Perché il Natale si Festeggia il 25 Dicembre in Occidente e il 7 Gennaio in Egitto?

In Egypt, Coptic Christmas is one of the most important religious holidays, celebrated with unique spirituality and traditions. Unlike Christmas, which is celebrated by most of the world on December 25 , Coptic Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on January 7. This difference in dates is related to the history and calendars used by different Christian Churches.

Why Are the Dates Different?

The difference in dates comes from the use of two different calendars :

  1. Julian Calendar (ancient)
    • Created by Julius Caesar in 45 BC, it is followed by the Coptic Orthodox Church for religious celebrations. This calendar accumulates a delay of 13 days compared to the Gregorian calendar.
  2. Gregorian calendar (modern)
    • Introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, this calendar corrected the inaccuracies of the Julian calendar and is today the civil calendar used throughout the world. Western Churches celebrate Christmas on December 25 according to this calendar.

In summary:

  • According to the Julian calendar: Christmas is on December 25th.
  • According to the Gregorian calendar: the same day corresponds to January 7 .
